The Town Hall is a splendid example of Gothic style, at least the central nucleus of which dates back to 1265. The Client wished to eliminate the enormous heat loss that the structure suffered during the winter months and to eliminate as far as possible the costs for conditioning in summer. It was therefore initially decided to proceed with the removal of the bent tiles and then make a ventilated roof, using panels of Stiferite Isoventilato. Unfortunately, once the bent tiles were removed, a cement roofing screed was revealed, and there was no way of knowing whether the underlying wood base had been completely maintained. The solution adopted to overcome this problem was to opt for a traditional warm roof composed of a vapour barrier – heat insulating panel – waterproofing membrane and a second slate-treated membrane – bent tiles. By altering the type of roofing and decreasing the thickness of the insulating panel by 1 cm, in comparison with the initial project, it was possible to avoid criticism from the Monuments and Fine Arts Office by not raising the gutter line. The panels used for the heat insulation of about 800 square metres were Class B panels 50 mm thick, produced by the Stiferite company in Padua, which, for their physical characteristics and performance standards, perfectly satisfied the needs of the application. Class B panels in rigid Polyiso foam are in fact particularly indicated for the heat insulation of flat or pitched roofs under a bituminous mantle. The coating of the upper surface of the panels consists of special bituminous and polypropylene-treated mineral fibre which facilitates the adhesion between the insulation and the waterproof mantle and is particularly resistant to the membrane torching operations.
