Today heat insulation products have an increasingly important role both in industry and in building.
Thanks to their use it is in fact possible to obtain:
comfortable buildings and efficient performances in industry
limited energy consumption
reduction of harmful emissions caused by any energy process
All these objectives are essential for respecting the undertakings established under the Kyoto Protocol: the agreement signed by the most advanced countries, committed to environmental policies to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases responsible for the heating of the atmosphere. About 20% of European consumption could be eliminated with an efficient policy.
Many of the resources used in energy processes and the emissions could be limited with a correct use of insulating materials. In Europe alone, in 2005, the gross energy consumption reached a figure of 1725 Mtep, which could be reduced by almost 20% by adopting criteria for limiting waste and improving efficiency (see "Doing more with less" - Green paper on energy efficiency).
The building sector accounts for about 40% of consumption and 20% of the emissions of carbon dioxide; however, it has a very high saving potential: about 50% of the consumption and 70% of the emissions can be eliminated by adopting more efficient building processes and using more and better thermal insulation.
In Europe, and now also in Italy, a serious legislative commitment has been undertaken to check the energy efficiency of buildings (EPBD - Energy Performance of Building Directive).
